Sir Thomas Pakenham and his fellows from the Irish Tree Society came to see the old arboretum of Ardnagashel. Here they are standing under the Irish Champion Cryptomeria japonica.
The former owner of Ardnagashel is the great-grand-nephew of Ireland’s first woman botanist Ellen Hutchins. Richard Newburgh Hutchins was looking forward to recieve the group but he is recovering from a stroke which hit him while in a train to Dublin to attend a seminar about how to maintain an arboretum. Thanks to instant help the 91-year-old man is recovering well. As a token of appreciation Sir Thomas Pakenham handed a Metasequoia to Richard’s niece Arethusa Greacen (daughter of Robert Greacen (1920-2008) and Richard’s sister Patricia).
Thomas Pakenham is the author of some awesome books. My favourite is Meetings with Remarkable Trees.
